Sweet Grass

Sweet Grass was a beloved neighborhood bistro in Memphis, renowned for its Low Country cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. Located at 937 S Cooper St in the Cooper-Young district, it became a staple for both casual diners and those seeking a special night out.

Cuisine & Atmosphere

The menu at Sweet Grass featured Southern-inspired dishes with a Low Country twist, highlighting fresh, local ingredients. Signature items included:

  • Shrimp and grits

  • Jambalaya

  • Oyster stew

  • Charcuterie and cheese boards

  • Deep-dish sour cream apple pie

The restaurant’s ambiance was cozy and unpretentious, making it ideal for both date nights and casual gatherings. Sweet Grass also operated a more laid-back sister establishment, Next Door, which offered a more casual dining experience with a focus on craft beers and pub fare.

Hours & Reservations

Sweet Grass was open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, with no reservations required. This approach contributed to its relaxed and welcoming vibe.

Closure & Legacy

In April 2022, Sweet Grass closed its doors after over a decade of service. Chef Ryan Trimm, the founder, expressed that he had not found a new location to continue the restaurant’s legacy.

The space previously occupied by Sweet Grass has since been transformed into The Public, a new venture led by Kate Ashby, owner of Knifebird. This establishment aims to offer a classic American bistro experience, focusing on quality dining and community connection.

While Sweet Grass is no longer operating, its influence on Memphis’s culinary scene remains, and its spirit continues through The Public.
